OUR HISTORY
Our group and family of meetings originated in Beaufort County, South Carolina during the COVID-19 pandemic. Al-Anon Beaufort County (ABC), the Al-Anon Information Service that serves Beaufort, Bluffton, Okatie and Hilton Head Island – also known as “the lowcountry” of South Carolina setup 14 temporary electronic meetings to provide their members with a way to stay connected and continue attending Al-Anon meetings while in person meetings were shut down. Once some of the meeting places reopened, there was still a large portion of members that were avoiding the small or enclosed meeting spaces as well as other members who realized that electronic meetings allowed for part-time residents and regular visitors to the region to attend meetings with Beaufort County locals year round. For this reason, it was decided that the 12:15pm Sunday meeting as well as the 7:00pm Wednesday evening meeting would remain even after the other temporary meetings closed.
With our Sunday/Wednesday meetings registered as one group, we brought in lots of online visitors to our local electronic meetings. Great bonds were built between the members and ideas were thrown around about creating some smaller, additional meetings with different formats/focuses. Monday evenings have a book study, Tuesday and Thursday mornings have ABC hosting our “coffee and CAL” meetings. Friday and Saturday was occupied by two local groups that existed before the pandemic, but became hybrids, with the Friday meeting eventually going full electronic.
In 2023, due to changes with how groups were listed (either in the GEA or a geographical area), the Sunday and Wednesday meetings which were originally one group had to split into two separate groups. The Sunday meeting continued on with the E-Lowcountry AFG name and the Wednesday evening meeting would adopt a new name. In late 2023, the Wednesday evening meeting underwent a format change as well as the long awaited name change. Renaming to “Crystal Rain AFG” in honor of one of our deceased member’s favorite readings, the format of this meeting became a legacies and tools of the program book study. Since the Monday evening “Searching and Fearless” book study covered books like Discovering Choices, From Survival to Recovery, etc. the Wednesday evening meeting opted to cover books like “Reaching For Personal Freedom”, “Paths to Recovery”, How Al-Anon Works” and “The Twelve Steps & Twelve Traditions”.
We encourage members to drop into any of the “E-Lowcountry AFG” family of meetings. The book studies read aloud, so you don’t have to own the book or have been there before to be able to participate.
